The highly anticipated film version of the existential and emotional romantic novel (first published on January 5, 2012 in the United Kingdom) has differences from the source material, as all adaptations do, in spite of the fact that both were written by Jojo Moyes making it definitely the most exceptionally close it can be “because otherwise it would be a six-hour film”, the author said when she talked to Buzzfeed UK.
The most exciting of all the differences is probably the points of view since you might have already figured out that Louisa's perspective is predominantly the star of the movie from the trailers and interviews.
In the book, however, the Traynors get chapters told from their points of view as well. You wouldn't have to worry about Lou getting little exposure though since some elements of her character is explained better specifically because of a very important subplot concerning a very sensitive issue which film-goers will be unaware of as it ended up being cut but not for the lack of trying on account of the scene having been actually filmed after six months of "rewriting it and rewriting it" with the director.
If that's not enough, no matter how much self-obsessed and nasty you find Patrick onscreen... it can only get worse, causing trouble not only for Lou. Additionally, the contrasting portrayals of the relationship he shared with her in the film and in the book might surprise the daylights out of you. Finally, don't forget to look out for the chat rooms, matching tattoos, slight feminism, economic restraints, trauma, and phobia among many other things.
