DLA Las Piñas HS LRC acquires latest The Heroes of Olympus book!

The High School LRC has recently acquired (sometime during June to September this year) The Demigod Diares (released 14 August 2012).

The Demigod Diaries is a collection of four new short stories with character interviews, illustrations of Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, Jason Grace, Piper McLean, Leo Valdez and a first ever seen picture of Thalia Grace (it also contains a picture of Hal who is a new character in the first story), puzzles, and a quiz relating to The Heroes of Olympus series from the Olympian Demigod books by the #1 New York Times bestselling author Rick Riordan.

It has debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

The four new short stories included are:

1. The Diary of Luke Castellan

This is a prequel to The Lightning Thief, told from Luke's point of view, in the days when he adventured with Annabeth and Thalia. Several questions that fans have asked over the years will be answered in this story.

2. Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes

A first-person narrative from Percy's viewpoint as he and Annabeth complete a task given by Hermes regarding his staff which happens a month after the end of The Last Olympian and before Percy went missing in The Lost Hero

3. Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford

A story set at Camp Half-Blood during the time between The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune, from Leo's point of view, with Piper and Jason guest-starring. The trio has only a few hours to stop an explosion that could level Camp Half-Blood. Just another normal day at camp!

4. Son of Magic

Riordan's own son Haley's writing debut, and his take on the world of Percy Jackson, which he inspired. You'll meet a demigod son of Hecate who fought with Kronos in the Battle of Manhattan, and learn what he's up to after the war. What would it be like to be an outcast demigod? What sort of powers would a son of Hecate control? You'll find out!

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) September Author of the Month - Cecelia Ahern

Ahern.

Cecelia Ahern (Irish name: Cecelia Ní hEachthairn; born 30 September 1981; age 31) is an Irish novelist. Ahern is the daughter of the former Taoiseach (head of government or prime minister) of Ireland, Bertie Ahern (from 26 June 1997 to 7 May 2008). Her older sister, Georgina, is married to Nicky Byrne of Irish pop group, Westlife.

She had been writing since 2002, has published several novels (genres: romance, sentimental, and chick lit), and has contributed a number of short stories to various anthologies. Her writings can be compared to the work of Jessica Adams, Susie Boyt, and Jenny Colgan.

Ahern also co-created (along with Donald Todd) and produced the ABC television sitcom (situation comedy) Samantha Who? starring Christina Applegate, Jean Smart, Jennifer Esposito, Barry Watson, Kevin Dunn, Melissa McCarthy and Tim Russ.

Some Ahern books we have at the LRC!

In 2002, when Cecelia Ahern was twenty-one, she wrote her first novel, PS, I Love You. Published in 2004, it was the number 1 bestseller in Ireland for 19 weeks, the United Kingdom, U.S., Germany and Holland. It is sold in over forty countries. The book was adapted as a motion picture directed by Richard LaGravenese, starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. It was released in the USA on 21 December 2007.

The work has stirred up some controversy for its close similarity to a 1997 Korean film entitled "The Letter" (편지), starring Choi Jin-shil and Park Shin-yang.

Her second book, Where Rainbows End (U.S. title: Love, Rosie), also reached number 1 in Ireland and the UK, and won the German CORINE Award in 2005. She has contributed to charity books with the royalties from short stories such as Irish Girls are Back in Town and Ladies' Night. Her second to latest book is called The Gift and was published just before Christmas 2008 in the UK. Ahern's following book, The Book of Tomorrow, was published on the 1 October 2009.

Ahern has published 10 single novels, six of which we currently have at the High School LRC:

Love, Rosie
If You Could See Me Now
Thanks for the Memories
There's no Place Like Here
The Gift
P.S. I Love You

The LRC plans to acquire more of her books in the future! :)

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) September Book of the Month - The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Perks!

We are featuring Stephen Chbosky's coming-of-age epistolary novel (novel written through a series of documents, i.e. letters), The Perks of Being a Wallflower, to prepare you for the movie tie-in hitting the theaters this month (starring Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, and Emma Watson)!

In 1994, while Chbosky was working on a "very different type of book" than Perks, he wrote the line, "I guess that's just one of the perks of being a wallflower." Chbosky recalled that he "wrote that line. And stopped. And realized that somewhere in that [sentence] was the kid I was really trying to find."

After several years of gestation (development of an idea), Chbosky began researching and writing The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a novel that follows the intellectual and emotional maturation of a teenager who uses the alias Charlie over the course of his freshman year of high school. The book is semi-autobiographical; Chbosky has said that he "relate[s] to Charlie[...] But my life in high school was in many ways different."

It was published on February 1, 1999 by MTV Books. The book, Chbosky's first novel, was an immediate popular success with teenage readers, has garnered a cult following ever since, and is widely considered a modern classic. By 2000, the novel was MTV Books' best-selling title,[11] and The New York Times noted in 2007 that it had sold more than 700,000 copies and "is passed from adolescent to adolescent like a hot potato".

Perks also stirred up controversy due to the portrayal of teen sexuality and drug use. It has been banned in several schools and appeared on the American Library Association's 2006 and 2008 lists of the 10 most frequently challenged books. However, the LRC has still decided to acquire it for the relevant and  rarely discussed topics it explores such as introversion, abuse, drugs, sexuality, and perhaps, most importantly, the awkward times of adolescence.

The story is narrated by a teenager (the eponymous wallflower of the novel) who describes various scenes in his life by writing a series of letters to an anonymous person, who appears to be someone he does not know personally. It takes place in a suburb of Pittsburgh during the early 1990s, Charlie's freshman year in a high school. Charlie is an unconventional thinker, and as the story begins, he is shy and unpopular.

The novel has mentioned and referenced many
different books, films, television shows, and songs:

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) September Author of the Month - Elisabetta Dami

Mr. Geronimo Stilton and Elisabetta Dami!
Who writes the Geronimo Stilton books?

Geronimo Stilton of course!

He is on the book covers and in the bibliographic information inside as the credited author of the books.

Geronimo Stilton is also the pen name of Elisabetta Dami (Milan, 1958), an Italian author who co-owns Edizioni Piemme, an Italian Publishing House that started publishing the Geronimo Stilton Books in the year 2000.

Elisabetta got her start in the world of fiction as a proofreader at the family publishing house. At the age of 19 she began to write her first stories. She has assisted sick children as a volunteer ever since she was young and this experience led to the idea of writing adventure stories featuring a mouse, Geronimo Stilton, as protagonist. The character became a hit both in Italy and abroad. It is thanks to this success that she is able to continue to help sick, orphaned and abandoned children.

In 1999 Elisabetta Dami began to collaborate with the Piemme publishing house, which, thanks to the entrepreneurial intuition of then-owner Pietro Marietti, decided to produce a collection of books telling about the adventures of Geronimo Stilton. Since 2000, when the first story came out, more than 65 million copies have been sold: 20 million in Italy, 45 million in the rest of the world. Intended for children from 5 to 12 years of age, her books have been translated into some 35 languages.

She has written more than 50 books.

The Geronimo Stilton Books are the most popular children’s books in Italy, even outselling Harry Potter! Scholastic has published the English translations of the Geronimo Stilton Books since 2004 and continues to release them every few months.

A graphic novels series is also available and an animated television cartoon series was released in Italy in 2009 and will air in most other countries by 2010.

  • The story is about Prosper and Bo who, after their mother's death, ran away from their unpleasant aunt Esther because she planned to adopt Bo and send Prosper off to boarding school. Arriving in Venice, Prosper and Bo fall in with a small group of children who live in an abandoned theater and make a living by stealing, led by a boy who calls himself the Thief Lord.

Tracked by an eccentric detective hired by their aunt, the children instead capture the detective and hold him prisoner while planning a theft, commissioned by a mysterious Conte, of a broken wooden wing that comes from a legendary, and possibly magical, carousel.
