(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) September Author of the Month - Elisabetta Dami

Mr. Geronimo Stilton and Elisabetta Dami!
Who writes the Geronimo Stilton books?

Geronimo Stilton of course!

He is on the book covers and in the bibliographic information inside as the credited author of the books.

Geronimo Stilton is also the pen name of Elisabetta Dami (Milan, 1958), an Italian author who co-owns Edizioni Piemme, an Italian Publishing House that started publishing the Geronimo Stilton Books in the year 2000.

Elisabetta got her start in the world of fiction as a proofreader at the family publishing house. At the age of 19 she began to write her first stories. She has assisted sick children as a volunteer ever since she was young and this experience led to the idea of writing adventure stories featuring a mouse, Geronimo Stilton, as protagonist. The character became a hit both in Italy and abroad. It is thanks to this success that she is able to continue to help sick, orphaned and abandoned children.

In 1999 Elisabetta Dami began to collaborate with the Piemme publishing house, which, thanks to the entrepreneurial intuition of then-owner Pietro Marietti, decided to produce a collection of books telling about the adventures of Geronimo Stilton. Since 2000, when the first story came out, more than 65 million copies have been sold: 20 million in Italy, 45 million in the rest of the world. Intended for children from 5 to 12 years of age, her books have been translated into some 35 languages.

She has written more than 50 books.

The Geronimo Stilton Books are the most popular children’s books in Italy, even outselling Harry Potter! Scholastic has published the English translations of the Geronimo Stilton Books since 2004 and continues to release them every few months.

A graphic novels series is also available and an animated television cartoon series was released in Italy in 2009 and will air in most other countries by 2010.
