(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) Film Showing of the Week - The Polar Express

Santa Claus does not exist. Or does he? Many of us (especially those who have fireplaces) were raised earlier in our lives believing that he is the one who at least grants one of the things on our lengthy wishlists and eats the treats (typically composed of a glass of milk and some cookies) we leave somewhere in the house (usually at our bedside tables just to be sure).

Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas) is a figure with legendary origins who in many Western cultures is said to bring gifts to the homes of children who have been good during the entire year on December 24, the exact night before Christmas Day. He's generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white-bearded man, sometimes with round eyeglasses, wearing an outfit out of red and white, riding on a sleigh pulled by reindeers.

This week's feature is a musical Christmas fantasy movie based on the children's book of the same title by Chris Van Allsburg.

It's the story of an unnamed young hero boy on late Christmas Eve who boards on a powerful magical train that's headed to the North Pole and to the home of Santa Claus along with many other pajama-clad children after lying in bed, just hoping to hear the sound of reindeer bells from Santa's sleigh.

What unfolds is an an astonishing adventure which follows a doubting boy who takes an extraordinary ride during which he embarks on a journey of self-discovery which shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Bring all of your friends and come join us for the LRC cinema's last film showing for 2014, a Christmas gift from us to you, before you go home on Friday this week at exactly 4:00 P.M.!

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) November Book of the Month - A Sister More Like Me

It's really unfortunate we can enjoy full-on snow in the country but who's stopping us from enjoying stories filled with those wonderful crystal flakes?? Explore a wintery world of magic straight from Disney Animation Studio's beloved 2013 animation when you get your warm hands on A Sister More Like Me by Barbara Jean Hicks.

The children's picture book features an original 32-page story about sisters Elsa and Anna as well as adorable illustrations by one of the artists who worked on the film, Brittney Lee.

A Sister More Like Me focuses on the incredibly cute and sweet relationship between the movie's two different siblings, especially adding a new dimension to Elsa's side of the story.

It's a tale of accepting who others are even in our own families, well-written in verse and offering a slightly varied take on the story of Frozen.

While still appealing to the younger pre-school age group due to the stunning art remniscient of Mary Blair's work (an artist who drew concept art for early Disney Company's films and large-scale theme park attractions), it will also attract Frozen's slightly older fans with the clever use of rhyme throughout. Start your countdown to the Christmas holidays and try to enjoy the cold weather more while you cozy up with A Sister More Like Me!

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) Film Showing of the Week - The Lion King 3

The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata (also known as The Lion King 1½ in the United States) is a direct-to-video part prequel/part parallel (or "in-between-quel" according to the film's teaser trailer), following two comical best-friends-turned-loyal-sidekicks and their involvement surrounding the original favorite. It is the third and final installment in the Lion King trilogy.

This movie is highly suspected to be inspired by Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, a play that created a humorous backstory for two minor characters from Hamlet since the original was partially based on the Shakespearean masterpiece.

The clever and snappy retelling focuses on Timon and Pumbaa before they met the Simba  and how the young lion lived with them.

They are shown watching the first movie and are being shown in silhouette while commenting on it, stopping and rewinding it at one point so they can show their side while occasionally stopping the footage to talk with each other.

The meerkat and the warthog's backstories gets narrated throughout the equally entertaining and thoroughly amusing colorful cartoon shenanigans, letting us see everything that happened in another enchanting perspective. Drop by on exactly 4:00 P.M. this coming Friday at the Learning Resource Center!

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) October Book of the Month - Midnight for Charlie Bone

Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first novel in the series of eight children's fantasy adventure novels called Children of the Red King (sometimes referred as the "Charlie Bone Series" after its main character) by the British author Jenny Nimmo. It might be Harry Potter all over again but specifically for younger children. Every book in the series is shorter for one thing and uses a lighter style of writing.

However, there are more non-magical people in these books and the creepy private school is run by bad people so it's not necessarily a good place to be. There's also no wands and brooms involved, believe it or not!

The fabulous powers of the Red King were passed down through his descendants, after turning up quite unexpectedly, in someone who had no idea where they came from. This is what happened to 11-year-old Charlie Bone as he starts to notice strange things happening to him and to some of the children he met behind the grim gray walls of Bloor's Academy where his cruel and uncaring grandmother and her even meaner sisters send him to.

Bloor's looks like a dreaded thing at first but it could lead to the whereabouts of a missing girl he's been asked to find by a bookstore owner Julia Ingledew's long lost niece that her brother had traded for a case of some sort. With the help of a friend and a loyal dog, as well as some of his other family members, Charlie goes on his first adventure to the school with the hopes of not letting Miss Ingledew down.

The author's vivid imagination is priceless with simply charming characters, believable depth, magical settings, and heartpounding mysteries. The entertaining fast-paced story is a real winner and will absolutely keep you at the edge of your chair. The sequel, Charlie Bone and the Time Twister, along with the other books in the series are all currently on display at the LRC and are available for checkout.

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) October Author of the Month - Christopher Paolini

This month we're getting to know a 30-year-old award-winning fantasy writer best known for the notable tetralogy Inheritance Cycle set in a fictional land focusing on the adventures of a teenage boy and his dragon as they struggle to overthrow an evil king. Born November 17 in Los Angeles and raised in the area of Paradise Valley (where he wrote his first book!), he goes by Christopher James Paolini.

He has one sibling, a younger sister. Christopher was homeschooled with her for the duration of their education by parents. He had often written short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely as a child.

Some of his favorite books were Bruce Coville’s Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, Frank Herbert’s Dune, and Raymond E. Feist’s Magician, as well as books by Anne McCaffrey, Jane Yolen, Brian Jacques, E.R. Eddison, David Eddings, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

Christopher graduated from high school at the age of 15 through a set of accredited courses from the American School of Correspondence in Illinois. Following this, he started work on the first draft of what would become the novel Eragon.

His literary inspirations include the works of J.R.R. Tolkien as well as the epic poem Beowulf. Other literary influences include Andre Norton and Mervyn Peake while other favorite authors include Philip Pullman, Terry Brooks, and Garth Nix. Nature influences much of Paolini's writing too. In an interview, Paolini said that Paradise Valley is "one of the main sources" of his inspiration.

He is grateful to all his readers, especially heartened to hear that his books have inspired young people to read and to write stories of their own. Although Christopher promises to return one day to the mythical Alagaësia, he is currently working on several projects set in other worlds. Guinness World Records recognized him as the “youngest author of a bestselling book series” last January 5, 2011.

In the same year, he stated that he has several science fiction ideas that he plans to possibly develop into novels in the near future.

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) October Cartoonist of the Month - Hergé

Probably one of the best cartoonists of all time, we introduce you to the creator of the famous series of comic albums called The Adventures of Tintin currently on display at a shelf in the Grade School Learning Resource Center fREADom hub. Let's get to know Belgian cartoonist Georges Prosper Remi better known as Hergé who was born 1907 in Belgium to a lower-middle-class family.

Although he would go on to be one of the world’s most iconic cartoonists, Georges was not a particularly standout student as a young boy. Instead, he preferred to indulge in his love for adventure and games with his friends on the streets of Brussels.

In secondary school, he joined the Boy Scouts. His drawing skills quickly caught the attention of the Scout leaders. It wasn’t long before he was illustrating a Scout magazine, The Adventures of Totor series, and creating his first characters.

The title Boy Scout character would become the inspiration for Tintin. It was around this time that he decided to take the pen name “Hergé,” the French pronunciation of his initials in reverse.

Georges left school at age 17 and eventually got a job in 1925 helping create the children’s pages of a daily newspaper, Le Vingtième Siècle ("The Twentieth Century"), where he began serialising the first of his stories to feature boy reporter named Tintin under the influence of Abbé Norbert Wallez. Hergé first drew Tintin in Le Petit Vingtième (the children’s pages of the newspaper) in 1929.

The little reporter was an instant success domestically and beyond. By the 1950s, the Tintin adventures had become so popular that the cartoonist set up Studios Hergé. This not only supplied him with a team of assistants and artists to expand the reporter's universe, it also freed him to do in-depth research for his stories (which started since The Blue Lotus), many of which took his characters to places that Hergé — and his devoted readers — had never seen.

To celebrate Hergé’s seventy-fifth birthday in 1982, the Société Belge d’Astronomie gives his name to a newly discovered asteroid located between Mars and Jupiter. He died in a hospital on March 3, 1983 at the age of 75. His death received front page coverage in numerous newspapers.

Hergé's works have been widely acclaimed for their clarity of draughtsmanship and meticulous, well-researched plots, and have been the source of a wide range of adaptations. He remains a strong influence on the comic book medium, particularly in Europe. The Hergé Museum in Louvain-La-Neuve was opened in 2009, commemorating his life and artwork.

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) Film Showing of the Week - Maleficent

Do you believe in true love?

This is the question that the iconic Disney antagonist portrayed by the award-winning actress Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) needs to face in this action fantasy re-imagining a well-loved classic through the eyes of a fictional wicked and self-proclaimed fairy godmother.

Maleficent explores the complicated untold back story of the eponymous iconic villainess and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turned her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect, she cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant princess.

Visually beautiful, the film is full of amazing performances and enchanting special effects just as it is brimming with important life lessons. We especially recommend watching it if you have seen and enjoyed the Broadway musical or read the Gregory Maguire novel WICKED about the witches of Oz way back before Dorothy dropped in.

Whether you already know her tale or not, come drop by on Friday and witness how our timeless antihero redeems herself in this spectacular animation which also features Angelina's youngest daughter Vivienne as small Princess Aurora on October 11 at 4:00 P.M. While you're at it, why not check out the Maleficent books we just recently acquired as well? Please approach any of the librarians or staff for any concerns. :)

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) October Book of the Month - Four

Four: A Divergent Collection or Divergent 0.1 - 0.4 is a collection of five short stories seen in the eyes of one of the lead characters in the bestselling science fiction adventure trilogy by 26-year-old American novelist and short story writer Veronica Roth, serving as a Tobias Eaton-centered prequel addressing his backstory and some of the mysterious things going on in the world before Tris chose Dauntless albeit some overlapping.

In July 2014, Roth revealed that she initially wrote Divergent from Four's point of view and at that time the character Tris was not present in the story.

She explained that it was the super rough draft, calling it the "proto-draft", a couple of pages from his perspective and it didn't work in the same way that Tris' voice worked because she was kind of surprising as the narrator but that as she wrote the series, he became more complicated and his story started to feel urgent also.

The collection compiles previously released individual e-books or e-shorts as Roth called them. Simultaneous with the release of the last three last July 8 this year, a collected edition of the stories was released.

Free Four (released April 23, 2012) retells the events of chapter thirteen of the first book. The Transfer (September 3, 2013) details how and why introverted 16-year-old Four (then called by his birth name) selected Dauntless on Choosing Day; The Initiate explores his time as a transfer initiate. The Son follows Four's early time as an initiate instructor and control room technician, and The Traitor chronicles key Divergent moments.

There's less violence in these than in the original books but Dauntless fights are still described. Because most of this bonus material take place before Four and Tris are together, there's not much romance as well. Divergent fans unhappy with the end of the trilogy and hoping for more of Four won't have to wait for Insurgent (the film) next year too!

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) Film Showing of the Week - Aladdin

Did you and your friends enjoy watching Frozen? We sure hope so! This week is stil Disney week though as we throw a classic and probably the ultimate flashback Friday so far on September 19 with the musical fantasy Aladdin based on the Arabian folktale from One Thousand and One Nights, a famous collection of Asian stories.

This is also somewhat of a homage to one of the best singers around, Ms. Lea Salonga, since she is Princess Jasmine's singing voice and to the late American actor Robin Williams who unfortunately passed away last month in California since he voiced the comical and powerful blue Genie.

In case you have amazingly forgotten, the film follows the story of the poor underdog named Aladdin who woos the spunky Princess by pretending to be a prince and getting help from a Genie who grants him three wishes. However, Aladdin has to tell Princess Jasmine the truth about his identity and defeat the evil power-hungry royal advisor slash sorcerer Jafar before happily ever after happens.

Aladdin was the most successful film on the year that it was released and has won many awards, mostly for its soundtrack (who could forget the shining, shimmering, splendid world that Aladdin promised to show Jasmine in that pop ballad while they were riding his wonderful Magic Carpet through an endless diamond sky?).

If you're up for an absolutely thrilling and entertaining adventure not only with the Magic Carpet, come and join us again on Friday at 4:00 P.M. onwards. Will love actually conquer all in the end? For comments and suggestions, don't hesitate to approach any of the available librarians or staff. :)

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) Film Showing of the Week - Frozen

Do you want to build a snowman?
It doesn't have to be a snowman.
Do you want to build a snowman
Or ride our bike around the hall?
I think some company is overdue...

Need we tell you more about this week's movie at the Grade School Learning Resource Center cinema? It's almost one year already from the first day we went on an epic journey with the estranged problematic Snow Queen Elsa, the fearless Princess Anna, the rugged iceman Kristoff, Prince Hans, the hapless Olaf, and Sven the loyal reindeer at the actual theatres with our family and friends yet we still can't get enough of unusually catchy lines!

The 2013 award-winning fantasy Disney film Frozen was inspired by the famous Danish children's literature writer, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. The story is one of the author's longest and most highly acclaimed ones, centering on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kai.

Frozen was met with strongly positive reviews from audiences, some film critics considered Frozen to be the best Disney animated feature film and musical since the studio's Renaissance during The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

Relive the songs and the tale of how the kingdom of Arendelle will persevere through winter on Friday, September 12 at exactly 4:00 P.M. before you come home and enjoy the well-deserved weekend! Don't forget to tell Mom, Dad, Kuya, and Ate that you'll be finishing the movie if you plan to so they won't be worried. If you want to see your favorite film next time, come tell any library personnel present.

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) September Author of the Month - Jay Asher

Come meet the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling contemporary teen novel Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher! He was born on September 30, 1975 and has one younger brother named Nate. They both grew up with a family that encouraged them to do all of their interests, from playing the guitar to writing.

After high school, he decided he wanted to become an elementary school teacher so he attended college where Jay wrote his first two children’s books for a class called Children’s Literature Appreciation.

He then transferred to a state university where he left his senior year in order to pursue his career as a serious writer. Except for six months in Wyoming, Asher has lived his entire life in California. It was during those months that he came up with the idea for Thirteen Reasons Why.

He's worked at various establishments throughout his life. Many of Jay's work experiences had an impact on some aspect of his writing. He hopes, someday, to work for a used bookstore.

Asher has written several picture books and middle school humor novels. He is a fan of the TV teen drama series My So-Called Life, citing it as a major influence on his work. Jay plays guitar and goes camping when he is not writing. He is a sought-after keynote speaker at libraries and schools across the country about his novels, suicide prevention, and creative writing for teens. He is currently working on his second novel.

(DLA Las Piñas HS LRC) September Book of the Month - The Maze Runner

Perfect for fans of Divergent and Hunger Games, maybe even The Selection and Lost, we present you with this month's heart-pounding and thought-provoking New York Times bestseller feature from award-winning writer, James Dashner, whose film adaptation will be hitting film theatres everywhere in the world around the first few weeks of this month and no, it's not just another dystopian novel.

The Maze Runner is proper different, in the way that the book is narrated in a guy protagonist's point of view unlike the aforementioned novels whose stories were primarily narrated in a girl's words. Also, a noticeable fictionalized slang is present, adding more realism to the characterizations.

Through an elevator, a confused Thomas is brought into the Glade. The place is surrounded by a gigantic limitless ever-changing Maze in which maniacal part animal part mechanical beasts roam at night, huge doors all around the Glade protect the residents from these creatures by closing every time the day ends.

Thomas has no memories of his life or the world outside, the only thing he remembers is his name. Devoid of adults, he and a lot of other teenage boys are inside the place where there is a makeshift community in which everyone is assigned to his own job while supplies are brought every week.

However, the day after Thomas is brought to the Glade, a girl is sent. This is when everything does finally just snap and change, thus beginning a desperate end game for the Gladers. It starts out slow as the main character has to adapt but every suspenseful scene afterwards are exclamation-worthy. Hurry and come borrow The Maze Runner at the fREADom Hub before you see the major motion picture from 20th Century Fox!

(DLA Las Piñas GS LRC) September Book of the Month - Shiloh

This month's spotlight is first in a suspenseful and emotional adventure trilogy about an 11-year-old boy and the title character by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor revolving around various themes: ethics, consequentialism, religion and morality, and animal–human relationships.

Narrator Marty Preston finds an abused young beagle puppy owned by his brutal and mean-spirited neighbor Judd Travers who drinks too much, defying society's standards of not meddling with each other's business.

It is a moving and powerful look at the best and worst of human nature while the protagonist learns that morality is confounding and must choose between two unpalatable choices: rescuing an animal through stealing and lying or allowing for the abuse to continue.

Without breaking new ground, the unusually heartwarming and appealing tale is well told, with a strong emphasis on family values. The author has made sure to put a lot of details to make sure that readers can really imagine the story's settings and to better understand the feelings being portrayed.

Readers will be absorbed by the suspenseful plot, which will leave them with some strongly memorable characterizations as well as several intriguing questions. Animal-lovers everywhere would absolutely enjoy this wonderful tough-as-steel story especially if you're a fan of books like Charlotte's Web. Shiloh is currently on display at the GS LRC and is available for checkout.

National Children's Book Week last month was a witness to the fun activity called

Our biggest thank you to everyone who joined and obviously put in a lot of effort,
we sure hope you had enjoyed the activity as much as we did!

After much difficult deliberation though courtesy of their very own art teachers,
we would all like to congratulate the following winners:

Audrey Moncera and Joseph Daniel Regachuelo from Tolerance
