Come meet the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling contemporary teen novel Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher! He was born on September 30, 1975 and has one younger brother named Nate. They both grew up with a family that encouraged them to do all of their interests, from playing the guitar to writing.
After high school, he decided he wanted to become an elementary school teacher so he attended college where Jay wrote his first two children’s books for a class called Children’s Literature Appreciation.
He then transferred to a state university where he left his senior year in order to pursue his career as a serious writer. Except for six months in Wyoming, Asher has lived his entire life in California. It was during those months that he came up with the idea for Thirteen Reasons Why.

He's worked at various establishments throughout his life. Many of Jay's work experiences had an impact on some aspect of his writing. He hopes, someday, to work for a used bookstore.
Asher has written several picture books and middle school humor novels. He is a fan of the TV teen drama series My So-Called Life, citing it as a major influence on his work. Jay plays guitar and goes camping when he is not writing. He is a sought-after keynote speaker at libraries and schools across the country about his novels, suicide prevention, and creative writing for teens. He is currently working on his second novel.
