DLA Las Piñas HS LRC acquires 2 J.R.R. Tolkien books!

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien ( /ˈtɒlkiːn/; 3 January 1892 – 2 September 1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor born in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State.

After serving in the First World War, Tolkien embarked upon a distinguished academic career and was recognised as one of the finest philologists (people who study language in written historical sources) in the world. He is, however, best known as the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic and extraordinary works of high fantasy fiction as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University in 1972. He died at the age of 81.

While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature—or, more precisely, of high fantasy. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945" while Forbes ranked him the 5th top-earning dead celebrity in 2009.

The High School LRC has recently acquired (sometime during June to September this year) the last two volumes from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers (T577lr v.2 1994) and The Return of the King (T577lr v.3 1994).
