If there are no wrong answers, can we really say that something has any meaning?
This month's feature is one of Lois Lowry's award-winning novels set in a society which is at first presented as a utopian society that has eliminated individual pain and strife while following a pivotal boy through the twelfth and thirteenth years of his life.
The story beautifully illustrates why people are given the freedom of choice even if it has resulted in people making bad choices, slowly destroying the incredible things that have been created for us.
The clever work is actually a tightly-woven mystery more so than it is the usual bland science fiction adventure with heavy morals it seems at first skim, keeping one at edge as the what happens next unfolds.
What makes it an enjoyable read is that there aren't much characterizations to form emotional connections with, community descriptions are sparse, plot is great, and the end is totally ambiguous albeit fantastic. A lot of lines, moments gives one chills and will continue to do so even if you have read them several times already.
Stunningly beautiful overall, The Giver is riveting and is one of the most thought-provoking novels ever written since tons can be gleaned from it. Many schools worldwide have adopted it as a part of their mandatory curriculum and has recently been made into a film bearing the same name to be realeased in selected theatres next month. Read the book, watch the movie, and experience the synergy.
